Old Castle

The old castle ruins, a bit of history on our back door.

What you can see is the remains of the Castle after the MacDonnells aquired the MacQuillans estate.  Folklore at Ballylough was that there was an arranged marriage, and at the marriage the MacQuillans were put to the sword.  The remaining bride came back after her death to haunt the ruins. A dig by Colin Breen in 2009 uncovered evidence of another Castle underneath, possibly one of the Savage Castles holding the north front back in 1200s.  Close to the castle is evidence of a Rath, and about 100m back into the covered lake is a Crannog, as yet not dated.
